France urges nationals to depart the West African nation promptly during jihadist fuel blockade

Fuel queues in Mali
Lengthy waits have been snaking around fuel outlets

The French Republic has issued an urgent recommendation for its nationals in Mali to depart as soon as feasible, as jihadist fighters persist their embargo of the country.

The Paris's external affairs department counseled nationals to exit using aviation transport while they remain available, and to refrain from surface transportation.

Energy Emergency Worsens

A recently imposed petroleum embargo on Mali, enforced by an al-Qaeda-affiliated organization has disrupted everyday activities in the main city, the urban center, and additional areas of the enclosed African nation - a one-time French territory.

France's announcement came as the maritime company - the leading international transport corporation - revealing it was suspending its activities in Mali, referencing the restriction and deteriorating security.

Militant Operations

The Islamist organization Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin has caused the obstruction by assaulting fuel trucks on major highways.

Mali has limited sea access so all fuel supplies are delivered by road from neighboring states such as the neighboring country and Côte d'Ivoire.

Global Reaction

In recent weeks, the United States representation in Bamako announced that support diplomatic workers and their relatives would leave Mali during the situation.

It said the fuel disruptions had influenced the power availability and had the "capacity to disturb" the "general safety conditions" in "unpredictable ways".

Leadership Background

Mali is now led by a military leadership headed by the military leader, who first seized power in a military takeover in the past decade.

The armed leadership had civilian backing when it assumed control, vowing to address the protracted safety emergency prompted by a separatist rebellion in the north by nomadic populations, which was then hijacked by Islamist militants.

Global Involvement

The UN peacekeeping mission and Paris's troops had been stationed in 2013 to deal with the escalating insurgency.

Each have left since the military assumed control, and the armed forces administration has contracted foreign security contractors to address the instability.

Nonetheless, the Islamist rebellion has endured and extensive regions of the northern and eastern territories of the country persist outside government control.
