‘He was brought back from the edge’: The comedy legend spent eight days in a coma during Covid pandemic.

The famed comedian experienced a “near fatal” cardiac event that led to him being put into an medically induced coma during the pandemic, per details from a new film about the entertainment icon.

As documented in I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, the legend of films such as Caddyshack and the National Lampoon series, who emceed the Oscars on two occasions, was hospitalized for five weeks in the medical facility.

“He wasn't right, and he couldn’t explain to me what was wrong. So, we went to the ER. His heart gave out. During those years he was drinking, he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy; which is when the heart muscles get weaker, and they can’t pump as much blood through the body with each beat.”

Physicians subsequently induced him into a state of unconsciousness for eight days, before warning his child, Caley: “He may not recover. We don’t know how aware he’ll be. Get ready for the worst.”

“Upon waking, all he could do was use his voice,” she continued. “He has essentially come back from the dead.”

The actor personally has stated that he has experienced recall difficulties since his hospitalisation, and in the project he does not recollect some of his past professional and personal controversies, including a fight with fellow comedian Bill Murray in a Saturday Night Live green room.

Chase said he was “upset” by his absence from the 50th-anniversary show of SNL earlier this year, at which he was in attendance but not on stage.

“Honestly, it was quite upsetting,” he said. “This is probably the first time I’m saying it. But I expected that I should have been on the stage too with all the other actors. When co-stars Garrett Morris and Laraine took the stage, I was puzzled as to why I didn’t. I wasn't invited. Why was I left aside?”

Now 82, Chase, almost died in 1980 when he was subjected to an electrical shock on the set of Modern Problems, an accident which precipitated a period of severe depression.
