I Believe I've Already Found Favorite Game of 2026.

Following my time with well over 200 new releases this year, I am officially turning the page on 2025. My year-end list is live, and I'm satisfied with the ultimate rankings, even knowing numerous fantastic releases probably slipped under the radar. Now, there's job is to other than unwind, disconnect briefly, and maybe enjoy a pleasant stroll in the— well, shoot, found another amazing experience. So much for my plans!

A Premature Front-Runner Appears

During my laid-back sessions, usually reserved for a handful of quirky titles, I've encountered potentially my initial top game of 2026. Sol Cesto is a peculiar roguelike for Windows PC that deconstructs a classic labyrinth explorer into a probability-fueled game of significant risk risk and reward. Take this as a preview for the in-the-know: If you take pride discovering a game before it hits the mainstream, test out Sol Cesto so you can make a dent in your indie credit card.

A Calculated Genre Subversion

Sol Cesto is a strategy-focused dungeon crawler that's different from everything I'm familiar with. The setup is that you must venture into a dungeon, progressing deeper and deeper in search of the sun, which has vanished from this mythical realm. In practice, that makes for some familiar roguelike structure. Select a character possessing unique parameters and powers, fight through each level of monsters, collect some permanent upgrades (which are teeth), and defeat a few biome bosses. Easy to grasp!

The Novel Gameplay Loop

The method by which you effectively complete a chamber, however. Every time you enter a new floor, the game presents a sixteen-square board of boxes. Each square holds a monster, a loot box, a trap, or a life-giving berry. To proceed, you simply click on one of the four rows, but the specific tile you select is up to chance.

You might see a row with two monsters, a strawberry, and a treasure chest in it. You initially will have a one-in-four probability of hitting a particular space in a row.

Subsequently, your probabilities change. The question becomes: Do you take the risk, or do you click on a safer line first and try to make less risky choices early? Herein lies the risk-reward dynamic in action in Sol Cesto, and it's captivating after you develop its rhythm.

Influencing Chance

The procedural hook is that your percentages can be shaped during an attempt by gathering teeth that change what things you're drawn toward. As an instance, you might get a perk that will lower your chances of encountering a trap, but will concurrently lower the odds of landing on a reward too.

  • Creating a build is about influencing the statistics as best you can to have a better shot at getting your desired outcome.
  • On a particular session, I invested my power boosts toward melee prowess and selected all the teeth I could that would increase my odds of attracting me toward monsters aligned with that strength.
  • On a different attempt, I built my character around treasure chests and coupled it with a perk that would debuff nearby foes each time I claimed a reward.

The strategic possibilities are limited, but it provides ample to work with to enable you to influence probabilities to your preference.

An Ever-Present Risk

Naturally, it's still a game of chance. You constantly face the possibility that you have a likely outcome to hit the desired tile but end up landing a monster that would deplete your final hit point. All selections is a gamble, so you feel ongoing pressure as you clear a floor out and decide when to continue selecting or to proceed to the following level instead of pushing your luck.

Tools such as destructive ordnance help cut down the chance, just like some hero powers. An adventurer's unique ability, charged after clearing four squares, lets gamers to click on a column instead of a horizontal row on a turn. By employing this move wisely, you can hold that ability for a crucial point to circumvent a perilous selection. There's a shocking degree of depth in the simple act of clicking.

Future Development

Sol Cesto is still in its preview phase, and it has another update scheduled until the complete edition is launched. A new character and a fresh guardian are scheduled to arrive by the end of January. The full launch likely won't be much later, but the studio haven't committed to a specific release window yet.

A Parting Thought

Regardless of when its 1.0 launch occurs, you ought to put Sol Cesto on your radar. I've been positively obsessed with it, uncovering each of small details and saving my accumulated currency every session to access a constant flow of meta progression rewards, including additional heroes and items available for acquisition during a run. I still haven't reached the bottom, and I suspect I'll continue working on that task when the full version launches. Sign me up for the complete journey.
