WHO Confronts Major Staff Cuts Following US Funding Pullout

The international health organization revealed plans to reduce its workforce by almost a quarter – amounting to over two thousand jobs – before the middle of 2026.

Financial Crisis Triggers Substantial Reorganization

The move comes after the US, previously the organization's largest contributor, withdrew funding previously this period.

Washington was contributing approximately eighteen percent of the organization's overall funding, causing a substantial financial gap.

Projected Staff Reductions

According to internal projections, the workforce is expected to drop from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in January 2025 to around seven thousand and thirty by mid-2026.

This decrease of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one posts comprises job cuts, retirements, and regular attrition.

"The past year has been one of the toughest in our existence, while we undertook a painful but essential process of prioritisation and restructuring," commented the organization's leader.

Financial Shortfall Persists

This Switzerland-headquartered body currently faces a funding shortfall of $1.06bn for the upcoming period, representing almost a fourth of its total funding.

The amount marks an reduction from a prior projected gap of 1.7 billion dollars noted in spring.

Not Included Finances

The budget projections do not include a further $1.1bn in expected contributions from current negotiations with various contributors.

The representative for the organization stated that the current unsecured portion of the budget is actually smaller than in earlier periods, crediting this to multiple factors:

  • Reduced overall budget size
  • The launch of a new donor outreach effort
  • An increase in member states' mandatory contributions

The restructuring initiative is currently nearing its end, paving the way for the agency to progress with a reshaped structure.
